Login without phone verification step if the user's geolocation is outside India

Created by Dada Khalandar khalandar S, Modified on Sat, 29 Mar at 5:52 PM by Dada Khalandar khalandar S

Problem:

  1. The user is unable to do mobile verification via SIM binding or OTP when traveling outside India.
  2. Old App users who are not in India and are not able to do mobile verification in New App
  3. Users who live abroad and have changed their phone numbers want to change their numbers to be able to log in.

Solutions:

Users will have the option to give OTP/skip phone verification if the user can not give OTP. If the user chooses to skip,

  • Step 1: user will need to sign in via Google Account. We match the Gmail id against the email in our records.
  • Step 2: user needs to give PAN no. We match the PAN no with the PAN in our record.

Post these 2 steps, the user will be able to log in using a passcode. If the passcode is not set yet (in the case of old app users), users will be able to set the passcode and log in.

Limitations:

  • This flow will work only when the geolocation is outside of India.
  • After 90 days, users will need to do verification again.
    • If the user is still abroad, the user can again skip phone verification by going through the flow again any number of times.
    • If the user has returned to India, then phone verification is mandatory.
  • It will work only for the following set of users:
    • Either user should have remembered the passcode OR
    • The passcode is not set OR
    • The user should be able to provide the mobile OTP OR
  • If the user has forgotten the passcode also, the resetting passcode will still need mobile OTP. We are working on an alternate flow here also. It will take some time.
  • The flow works only with those users who have given a Gmail ID while creating an account. 98% of our users have Gmail IDs
  • This does not solve completely for mobile number change but allows them to log in if they are outside India and unblock them temporarily. Transaction OTPs for such users can come by email.
